Basic Arabic — Letters, Words & Sentences for Absolute Beginners

June 2, 2026 by

If you're an absolute beginner, basic Arabic is more approachable than you think. Master the alphabet, a few hundred words and a simple sentence pattern, and you can read and write at a useful level in 30 days.

Step 1 — The Arabic alphabet (28 letters)

Arabic is written from right to left in a flowing cursive script. There are 28 letters, each with up to 4 shapes:

  • Isolated (standing alone)
  • Initial (at the start of a word)
  • Medial (in the middle)
  • Final (at the end)

Six letters never connect to the next letter: ا د ذ ر ز و. Once you learn this rule, joining letters becomes intuitive.

Step 2 — Vowel marks (harakat)

Short vowels are written as marks above/below letters: fatha (a), kasra (i), damma (u), sukun (no vowel). Arabic newspapers usually skip these, but you read with them first while learning.

Step 3 — Your first 50 Arabic words

What's your name?ما اسمك؟mā ismuk?
My name is…اسمي…ismī…

Master 50 of these and you can hold a basic conversation. Build to 500 and you're functionally fluent for daily life.

Step 4 — Your first sentence patterns

  • Subject + adjective: "The boy is big" → الولد كبير
  • Subject + verb: "I read the book" → أنا أقرأ الكتاب
  • Question word + sentence: "Where is the school?" → أين المدرسة؟

Step 5 — Daily practice routine (20 min/day)

  1. 5 minutes — review 5 new letters/words
  2. 10 minutes — read a simple Arabic paragraph aloud
  3. 5 minutes — write 5 sentences using new words
